The Myths of Balloons

There are a few questions we get asked on a regular basis…

Are your balloons made from Bubblegum?

AND

Are your balloons biodegradable?

So we’ve decided to put the answers in one place because we equally want to leave a world our children can be proud of.

Are Your Balloons Made From Bubblegum?

Nope. Never have been, never will be. Neither do we put Bubblegum inside the balloons, chew Bubblegum whilst blowing the balloons or are associated with any Bubblegum companies. It’s simply a fun play on the Bubble Balloons we send out so regularly.

Are Your Balloons Biodegradable?

There are two core types of balloon – Latex and Foil.

Latex balloons are made from the sap of rubber trees, making them a completely natural substance. The company we purchase our latex balloons from is committed to responsible sourcing, resulting in our balloons being made from rubber trees located in plantations that are Rainforest Alliance Certified™. You may have heard people saying that latex balloons degrade at the same speed as oak leaves – which is true. The oxidization of a latex balloon begins the minute it’s inflated and if responsibly disposed of (either in landfill or a compost heap) the balloon with biodegrade anywhere from 6 months to 4 years. Like any product, the time is dictated by many factors.

Foil balloons are made from nylon covered in aluminium, which takes much longer to degrade in the environment. Regardless of your balloon choice, Bubblegum Balloons refuses to be involved in any balloon releases. Despite it being possible for latex releases to be done in an environmentally friendly way, there is too much at risk and therefore not something we wish to be associated with.

The moral of the story is to always dispose of your balloons in a safe and secure way to provide them with the best chance of degrading at the quickest rate possible.
